Eyam additional text pages
The main aim of the map company
has been the production of the map itself. However in the
preparation of the map it was necessary to edit a lot of the
information collected from people in the village. If you have not already obtained
a copy of the map, then we urge you to consider it, we simply
cannot show you how good it is here!
If you
already have a copy of the map, then you will find some
duplication, and there are a few contradictions where slightly
different stories have found their way in! The origin of the name
"Eyam" itself is one such case. We hope you will find
many things to interest you in these pages.
At the end of each page is a
link back to the top, the home page, and this site map.

village, opposite the church

here in two viewpoints.
- Village
school
Some
anecdotes from the record books. (The
punishment section will be of most
interest to serving teachers)
- Industry in and around Eyam
All the important present and historical industries
- Village
architecture.
The
prosperity of Eyam's industrial past has left a
considerable variation of building styles within
the village.
- Birdlife and Flora
Lesley
May has compiled some brief notes on the natural
history aspect of the village.
- The Church
St. Lawrence church Eyam
- Rectors
of Eyam
Brief
lives of some of the more notable of the
past leaders of the church in Eyam.
- Non-conformist
worship in Eyam
The Wesleyan reform and
Methodist chapels.
- Farming
Past and present changes to agriculture
in the village.
- Mining and Geology
Eyam has a rich vein
(sorry) history of mineral industries. Today this
remains only through the Fine Grindings mine, and
the Stoney Middleton quarries. The industrial
relics abound however, and the geology of the
area is fascinating. Plus
the map editor is a caver - so lots of
contributions for this topic!
