The map itself has been drawn as if you were hovering in the air to the south of Eyam, some hundreds of feet above the limestone quarries of Stoney Middleton. From this point you would be able to see the village laid out in front of you, as if straggling itself in a comfy armchair. The aim in drawing the map was to represent all of the houses of the village, and to include as much information as possible about the buildings and events. The result is a beautiful cross of styles, from the grand estate maps of the 17th to 19th centuries, through Ordnance survey precision, to social comment and tour guide to a fine piece of artwork.
